April 12     Reginald Ryan

The league extends condolences to the Ryan family on the passing of Reg Ryan, on March 14. Reg last played in our league in 1989. There are only a handful of guys still playing who would have played with him or had known him. But it needs to be said that Reg had a significant impact on the creation and development of our league which extends back now almost fifty years. He was a driving force in the building of the Bill Rahal field complex and was instrumental in bringing Ted Williams to our province to open the facility. Many wonderful pictures of that visit are contained on our website with Reg front and centre. Rest in peace Reg.

Right now teams are designated in number format. When the draft is held in early May, based on the order of pick, teams will be assigned to each number, and the Team Lists page will be updated for all players. The schedule right now is a guideline. There may be changes based on further review, keep that in mind. So, on behalf of the league we wish to extend holiday greetings and good luck in the new year to you and family.

West End Club now await a challenger in the crossover game. Will it be TLC Nursing & Home Care. Will it be Brooks Law. How long will they be standing there, waiting. The wild and windy night dictates the answer. Time will tell. There will be a pool of tears. There will be laughter and cheers.Stay tuned.

September 16     Be On Your Tippy Toes

Lots of new stuff to learn today as we get into elimination softball games. One round robin game remains this morning and it will decide who plays in the first two elimination games this morning. The 4v5 game goes at 10am and we know Humby Walsh will play the loser of Keyin vs Brooks Law. Humby Walsh are either.home to Keyin or away to Brooks in that game. The winner of KC vs BL is home to TLC at 11:30am. Last night West End Club took first place in the round robin with a 5-4 victory over Mount Pearl Dental. They are now home team in the 1v2 game set for 1pm.

September 15     Then There Were Six

On a miserable drizzle-soaked evening at the Bill Rahal Field, Brooks Law humbled an already eliminated Holdens Courier 15-6 to claim the final and sixth playoff spot for the 2023 season. Colin Bennett hit his second home run of the playoffs to lead the charge. The win elimnates Pops Pub from any further action. Two round robin games remaining. Brooks Law and Keyin College play the final game Saturday morning. That will decide third place for the start of elimination games for the four teams vieing for a spot in the crossover game Sunday. Tonight West End Club and Mount Pearl Dental faceoff to decide top spot in the round robin and home field in the 1v2 game.

September 14     Tighten Up

James Brown was right. Things are about to tighten up.  All looked bleak for Humby Walsh last night down 10-6 but a stubborn rally pulled out a 14-12 win over TLC spoiling a two homer night by Kelly Blidook. Brooks Law and Pops Pub were licking their lips until that point. But the rally squelched their hope of both clinching a playoff spot and awarded one to Humby Walsh instead. One spot now remaining. Brooks Law have the upper hand needing only one point, a tie or win, in their final two games. Tonight against already eliminated Holdens Courier. Or Saturday morning against Keyin College who have already clinched a spot. Pops Pub must sit and wait and hope for a tiebreaker. No pressure? You never know what will happen when things tighten up.

September 13     Then There Were Seven

Keyin College posted a 12-2 win over Pops Pub Monday night to clinch a playoff spot and eliminate H&S champs Holdens Courier from further action. September 17     Scenarios

After a Saturday of eight games and two per team, what have we learned? If you have seven or eight points you play next weekend. If you have eight points a win will get you at least a tie-breaker for first or second. Seven points and with a win you will need some luck to get a tie-breaker for the same. Six points and you earn at least a tie-breaker to play next weekend and with a win you still may have a chance at a tie-breaker for second. Any points less than six and you still have a shot at getting to next weekend. If all the home teams win tomorrow, no playoffs are required for next weekend. If all the home teams lose tomorrow, again, no playoffs are required to get to next weekend. But the possibility that four teams may tie for second exists, which could result in three tie-breaker games being required on Sunday and week nights. Stay tuned.

September 27       Mount Pearl Dental League Champs
On a sunny afternoon yesterday at the Bill Rahal Field, Mount Pearl Dental captured the league championship and Fong Dowden Trophy with a 10-6 win over Holdens Courier. September 26 must be a lucky day for Marty and the boys as it is the date for two years in a row that MPD has captured the title. This year is extra special as it is the first time in league history that a team has won the championship game playing all 16 players.Quite an accomplishment for both Mount Pearl Dental and league fair play. Congratulations boys!!

September 23       Playoff Weekend Becomes Clearer
The playoff situation for this weekend got a little clearer and will be straightened out tonight, maybe. All we know right now is Mount Pearl Dental finished first and will play second place Holdens Courier in the 1vs2 game Saturday at 3pm. TLC Nursing and Home Care have been eliminated from further competition. All teams with six points will play the weekend and tonights game may tell whether Humby Walsh or Brooks Law see further action. A Humby win versus Holdens results in a four way tie for third and eliminates Brooks. Of the round robin games among those four tied teams Caines Grocery and West End Club have four points and Keyin College and Humby have two. Caines beat West End so they are awarded third and West End fourth. Humby beat Keyin so they are awarded fifth and Keyin sixth. If Humby lose to Holdens then Humby are elminated and there is a three way tie for third. West End, Caines and Keyin have each won a game in the matches they have played together so final positions are decided by plus minus with West End third, Caines fourth, and Keyin fifth. Brooks finshes sixth. If the game is a tie tonight.there is still a three way tie for third with positions decided as above. Humby and Brooks would then play a playoff game for sixth Friday night.

Dave Walshs two run double in the bottom of the fifth snapped a 6-6 tie leading Humby Walsh to a 13-8 victory over Keyin College in the final of the Heart & Stroke Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Bill Rahal Field. Humby Walsh broke the game wide open with five more runs in the sixth cruising to the victory. The win was bittersweet for Humby Walsh as Gary Quinlan left their second game of the day and did not return. The championship game score was not a misprint as both teams were finalists last season. Keyin College who have struggled early in the season pulled it all together on Sunday only to come up a little bit short with a cinderella effort. For the third year in a row Humby Walsh begins their quest for a league triple crown title by winning the first jewel and the Cec Whittle trophy. They are presently in first place during the season. Third time could be lucky for the boys in blue.
